- "I found Professor Wilcox to be one of my best professors at Columbia thus far, and I am a junior. I know he is new to Columbia but he adjusted well in teaching. I had another new teacher this semester in a different subject and it was interesting to see how Professor Wilcox was better able to teach because he really prioritized the students needs and desires in class and this in hand helped him continually adjust the course to be the best it could be. He was also very sensitive to the ongoing protests on campus and very personally difficult circumstances many students were dealing with. It showed he really wanted the best for us. He was very timely with returning assignments and always had extremely clear guidelines and expectations for those assignments. I highly recommend taking a course with Professor Wilcox."
- "Enthusiastic and engaging class discussions, interesting lectures and commentary, detailed feedback."
- "John will push students to truly know the material. Because of this he creates a class of students that can not only philosophically and methodologically debate studies/results, but also propose actual solutions for improving studies from the perspective of making more accurate assessments. He also structures the class in a way that builds from showing the pitfalls of flawed judgement accuracy (i.e. false imprisonments, COVID predications) to actually teaching students real skills they can implement to assess and improve accuracy of their own person and of the communities they are members of. His explanations can at first seem intimidating because it is very statistics heavy, but he really takes the time to explain everything until the entire class felt comfortable with the concepts. His class takes the use of stats past what is possible in other basic statistics and research methods classes. He is also incredibly receptive of feedback throughout the class (providing an anonymous submission portal that anyone at anytime can submit to) and strives to be the best professor possible."

- "He seemed to really care about us as people, not just as students. I really appreciated him genuinely checking in and I felt like he really cared about our wellbeing and put that first, which is something I think everyone needs right now. "
- "He taught me writing style, how to consider other viewpoints, where to look for help, how to be structured, how to really pick at my writing. He is a very relatable person and I enjoyed going to his section. He was also immensely understanding. He is very detailed in his criticism. I felt I was growing as a writer. He is very thoughtful and I felt challenged to always think deeply."
- "John was the number one proprietor of supporting mental health. He would check in on us constantly and even allow us to receive a recorded section if we voiced that we were suffering in our mental health."
Phil 184/284: Formal and Informal Epistemology - Stanford University
- "THE BEST! His sections and handouts were super clear; they carried me through an otherwise confusing class for a beginning
philosophy student. He responds really quickly and helpfully to emails. He really cares about his students!"
- "I learned a lot from John! Great TA, everything he said was super clear and easy to understand. Best TA!!"
- "Very approachable and encouraging us to ask questions. Had a great pulse on how the class was
doing/ feeling...Incredibly open and responsive (immediately) to feedback!"
Phil 150/250: Mathematical Logic - Stanford University
- "John's personality is tailor-made for interacting with a wide range of people and communicating information. Overall, 10/10 TA."
- "Incredibly knowledgeable and good at communicating difficult ideas in simple ways"
- "Very approachable and kind"
- "John is extremely knowledgeable about Mathematical Logic and often times clarified difficult concepts... He is clearly passionate about the material, which helps him explain material."
- "John is always willing to help, be it in section, office hours, via email, or even by meeting outside of class time. It is obvious that he is very dedicated to his students' wellbeing and success."
- "Not only does John put a lot of effort into teaching, he also does a fantastic job of it. His explanations in section were extremely clear. I had absolutely no background in logic coming into this course and sometimes found myself psyched out by all the complex/fancy terminology during class, but weekly section with John always helped me understand the concepts. John is pretty much the sole reason that I was able to break down the class material into understandable bits."
- "John is very organized, and comes to section prepared to run class and answer every question. I have not heard a single complaint about how he runs section or his knowledge."
- "John is also super easy to talk to. He runs section in a casual manner (but not too casual such that section is
ineffective), which makes it easy for students to ask questions, no matter how basic. Indeed, I never felt dumb asking really elementary questions in section--the environment John created invited clarifications of any kind, which is extremely helpful to all students. I even appreciate his wonky accent :)"

- "Our tutor, John Wilcox! John was an incredibly engaging tutor, incorporated a healthy dose of humour into his classes, and was thoroughly knowledgeable on the subject matter. John went above and beyond to ensure we all achieved the best grades possible and to ensure we understood the course content. Could not recommend him highly enough - easily my favourite tutor throughout undergrad. I was actually pleasantly surprised that this subject was so engaging... I never thought I would enjoy a statistics subject."
- "John is probably the best tutor I've ever had. All of the tutorials were so well organised, engaging and lively. I could easily say that I actually looked forward to attending the tutorials. You can tell that John puts a lot of effort in condensing the key points of the lectures and readings for our class, and he made sure that he created a learning environment that was open and supportive enough that nobody felt intimidated to ask questions. The fact that he went out of his way and spent time outside of working hours to send the class emails which provided great detail about the expectations of the assessments was so amazing."
- "John Wilcox was awesome! I found his teaching style to be more engaging than other tutors I have had. He made the subject far more enjoyable."
- "John Wilcox was one of the best tutors I've ever had at university. He was excellent at explaining the content in a way that was easily understandable and made sense. As someone who usually struggles with statistics and maths, John's ability to explain stuff simply was fantastic, and he's a top bloke to boot. John's tutes made the subject far more enjoyable than it would have been otherwise."
- "I also want to praise John. He is honestly one of the best tutors I have ever had.... I thought that I would attend John's class and swap out if he wasn't any good. I think that was one of the best decisions I have made this semester. John is interesting, very capable, funny and genuinely cares about his students. He has made himself very accessible and I really appreciate that. Even when some of the content was dry, he was able to make it interesting. John created a classroom environment that makes me want to go to tutorials. He was extremely effective in building rapport with the members of our class and I think this created a culture where we all felt extremely comfortable to ask questions, make friends and learn."
- "I think a good teacher is one who can cultivate intellectual curiosity among their students, regardless of the subject matter. Even if Aaron and John taught a class that explored the anatomy of a caterpillar - I would sign up."
Phil 218/338: Problems in Epistemology - The University of Auckland
- "John was very successful in stimulating my interest in the subject. He made the material easy to understand and covered it in a very interesting and thought-provoking way. He was also very friendly and approachable as a tutor, as well as very professional and also had very interesting viewpoints and theories about the subject which made it even more interesting coming to tutorials."
- "Concise recaps of the lecture material were really helpful... Amazing tutor :)"
- "John is clearly very passionate about philosophy and his sound understanding is complemented by his effective, humourous teaching style... Mad respect."
- "You remind me of Prince William. Awesome."
